We love homemade almond milk. If you think it takes a lot of work to make almond milk yourself, I will show you here how you can quickly and easily prepare almond milk yourself with little effort. With 2 ingredients you get a super creamy almond milk that you can sweeten according to your own taste and add different flavors, e.g. Vanilla, chocolate. One of my go-to types of milk, for homemade dairy-free milk that tastes incredibly delicious.

Pouring some almond milk in a jar

Almond milk is a super simple and dairy-free milk substitute that we prepare from almonds and water. Isn't it unbelievable that you only need 2 ingredients for a great milk alternative?

You can use this milk as you would use cow's milk.

I think that homemade almond milk not only tastes better, it is also a lot cheaper, especially if you re-use the almond pulp.

Of course, we also buy almond milk in the supermarket, especially on the go. And I keep finding that the homemade tastes a lot better.

What ingredients do I need to make homemade almond milk?

As mentioned above, you only need two ingredients. Almonds and water.

You can also sweeten the almond milk with dates, or add vanilla or cocoa powder.

You also need a high speed blender, which is essential for a creamy almond milk, and a nut milk bag or a French press. The latter is easy to squeeze the milk. Just try what you like better.

Set up of making homemade almond milk with a jar of almonds, sieve, nut milk bag, and two jars with almond milk

How do I prepare homemade almond milk?

Start by soaking the almonds, take a bowl and fill with almonds and water. If you know you need almond milk the next day, just soak the almonds overnight. If you don't know, use hot water. I usually boil some water in a kettle and soak the almonds in it for 30 min.

Now take the sifted almonds and put them in a high speed blender and fill with water. Now blend on the smoothie or puree setting if you have such a function on your high speed blender, or you blend it for about 1 minute and 15 seconds. This is what makes the almond milk so incredibly creamy.

Variant 1: Now take a nut milk bag and place it in a sieve over a sufficiently large bowl. Now put the almond milk in the nut milk bag and squeeze out the liquid.

Variant 2: If you don't have a nut milk bag or you want less effort, use a French Press. Pour in the almond milk and slowly press down the sieve of the French Press until it is at the bottom. Your almond milk is ready.

How long should I soak almonds?

Soak the almonds in cold water overnight. Or if you want to go fast, take hot water and soak for about 30 minutes or longer.

What is carrageenan and is it healthy?

Homemade almond milk does not require any preservatives or additives such as carrageenan. Carrageenan is often used as a gelling agent in purchased almond milk, which makes the milk thicker and creamier. Carrageenan is obtained from seaweed. And, alongside agar-agar, it is one of the most popular plant-based gelling agents.

Opinions differ whether carrageenan is harmful or not. It is said to cause inflammation and gastrointestinal complaints. Whereby I think that the frequency of use should be considered.

Here you have to decide for yourself whether you want to consume carrageenan in your almond milk every day (if the almond milk you buy contains it) or whether you would rather use homemade almond milk that does not contain any additives.

Is almond milk better than normal milk?

How healthy is almond milk compared to cow's milk? I nursed my daughter e.g. until she was 2.5 years old and we rarely drink milk (vegan milk) as a drink. Every now and then my children want a glass of milk, then we usually get almond milk for us.

Basically, it is not necessary to give the children milk in the form of a drink. Although advertising often suggests that you should drink milk. And it’s best that the little ones do it.

For example, I didn't breastfeed my son for so long. He was given water instead of milk when he was thirsty and not cow or other milk.

With a varied diet with lots of vegetables, fruits and legumes, the children and adults will get enough nutrients.

And let's face it, why should it be healthy to drink the breast milk of another species, whether cow, pig, dog? If you are interested in the health facts of milk and other animal products, you should definitely watch this documentary or this one.

What are the benefits of almond milk?

    • Many people are lactose intolerant and cannot tolerate milk. Almond milk is lactose-free and can be tolerated by most.
    • Almonds have a high calcium and iron content.
    • Almond milk has no casein which is associated with cancer

How does homemade almond milk become cheaper than purchased almond milk?

To make almond milk cheaper than that from the store, just use the almond pulp in e.g. homemade bread or dry it and use it as almond flour in recipes.

How long does almond milk last?

The almond milk lasts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Although, we still use the almond milk after a week. It is best to always prepare almond milk as needed. Please make sure that you shake the almond milk before use, as the homemade almond milk will settle.

I can also well imagine that you can freeze the almond milk, but I haven't tried it yet.

Simply add the almond milk in portions, e.g. freeze in ice cube trays or mason jars.
